Akari TAKIMI Livestock Photographer (b. 1991, JP)
For the first time she left Japan when she was 23 and stayed in New Zealand for a year and 3 months. At farmstays, she faced the euthanasia of a calf. Once again she realised that other lives are what keeps us alive. This led her to start a career as a livestock photographer in 2017. Her concept is to make 'Itadakimasu' a universal word. She has photographed livestock animals such as cattle, sheep, pigs and chickens in Japan, New Zealand and Australia. Featured in domestic and international media have commended her unique style. Her work includes photography, exhibitions, speeches and classroom teaching.

Japanese have a phrase they like to say before eating a meal 'ITADAKIMASU'.
It’s an expression of gratitude to the person who cooked the meal and who produced food and to the animals, vegetables and fruits whose lives were sacrificed to make it.

She was born and grew up in the city. She used to say "ITADAKIMASU" to her daily meal as usual. At the farmstays, she learnt how food is produced by harvesting vegetables and fruit, milking cows and watching chickens being slaughtered. The casual greeting ‘ITADAKIMASU’ became an expression of gratitude for life. Her farm mates from all over the world said it was a wonderful word. Then she realised that it is a uniquely Japanese phrase. On the other farm, she was shocked because she faced the euthanasia of a calf. She couldn’t stop crying that day and wrote down the incident on social media. Once again she realised that other lives are what keeps us alive.
Through my work, she wants to create chances for people to face the lives of livestock animals and ourselves. She hopes this will provide opportunities to reconsider the fact that all food has a life, which keeps us alive.

On the night of a calf euthanasia, she wrote down the following sentence that she should not forget.

Today we found a baby which was born last night. Then it was raining. When we saw her, she was sick. Because she was born too early and tiny, and it was too cold and wet at that time. But she was definitely alive this morning.
In New Zealand you have to kill animals when you think they can't live anymore. Because they will suffer until death. For this reason, she was born today, and she was killed today. It was so sad. I know we have to do it. There are lots of animals on the farm, so we can't save them all. This happens sometimes. But she got life from her mother, and she was alive hard. I wanted to save her. I don't think she wanted to die. I can't get it out of my head that she was moving, and she was alive this morning.
Thank you for teaching the importance of life. Thank you for being born. It was only several hours, but she taught me a lot of things. I wish you happiness in heaven.
